Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Murder Statistics.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

35 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the numbers of murders reported to the Garda Síochána during the year 2000, and since the beginning of 2001; the number of cases in each category in which charges have been brought; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6157/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 41 murders were recorded in the year 2000. Of this total, 34 have been detected, and proceedings have commenced in 29 of these cases. I should add that these figures are provisional and subject to change.

I am also informed that the Garda Síochána is investigating three murders which occurred during the current year to date. Charges have been brought in one of these cases, and the others remain under investigation.
