Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

57 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the promised Family Law Bill will be published; if it will contain measures to broaden the scope of domestic violence legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6134/01]

The Government's legislative programme announced by the Chief Whip on 25 January 2001 indicates that the Family Law Bill is expected to be published in late 2001. Various issues concerning the protection of persons from violence in the home continue to be reviewed by my Department. As part of that process the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, 1996, are being examined in the light of experience gained in the first few years of its operation. Where changes are found to be feasible and warranted I will include them in the Family Law Bill.
