Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

56 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the changes planned in the system of Garda Síochána training arising from the recent IPA report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6152/01]

The recent IPA report on Garda in-service and management development training identified priority training needs for the future and made recommendations for restructuring of existing courses and in-service and management development training. The consultants also recommended a training and development strategy and the establishment of a specialist training development unit within the Garda College.

The IPA report has been endorsed by the Garda SMI steering group and will now be implemented by Garda management. A key step in implementation is the establishment of the proposed specialist training and development unit at the Garda College, Templemore. Steps are being taken to recruit a head of the training and development unit and specialist training staff. Redesign of training programmes will commence when the proposed training and development unit is in place.
