Vol. 532 No. 1

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 that deal with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately, and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

(Mayo): I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following subject of vital national interest: the immediate danger of a California-like electricity power collapse, in the light of yesterday's acknowledgement by the ESB that its network is creaking at the seams. There are major transmission and generation problems, and power deficiencies are shutting down data processing centres at peak periods. The IDA have stated that existing jobs and future job prospects are under threat because of inadequate electricity supply. The Minister for Public Enterprise recently gave inaccurate information to the Dáil when she stated that there was no threat to electricity supply.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

(Dublin West): I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following specific and important matter of public interest, which requires urgent consideration: the circumstances surrounding the allocation of the second mobile telephone licence to Esat Digifone. I make this request having regard to the $50,000 donation by the conglomerate backing the company to Fine Gael, which was a major component of the Government at the time, and the influence donations to political parties have had on Government policy on the privatisation of the telecommunications industry.

Having considered the matter fully, the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
