Question:

150 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers involved in the provision and supervision of practical oral and aural examinations; the numbers involved in the supervision of written leaving certificate and junior certificate examinations; and the numbers involved in the correction of examination papers. [8522/01]

The position is that of those engaged to assist in the certificate examinations each year, it is estimated that about 5% are non-teachers. My Department appointed 4,555 superintendents for the 2000 certificate written examinations. In addition, schools appointed over 2,000 supervisors for special centres, practical examinations and aural examinations. The number of examiners involved in marking the written, oral and practical tests in the 2000 certificate examinations is set out in the following table:
