Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Denis Naughten

Question:

122 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Defence the plans he has to increase the pensions granted to civilian workers in Army barracks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8552/01]

The terms of the non-contributory pension scheme for civilian employees with the Defence Forces are the same as those that apply to non-established State employees in all Departments. The scheme provides for the payment of a pension and a lump sum on retirement, subject to certain service criteria. In addition, by virtue of their PRSI contribution, non-military employees would be eligible for either a contributory retirement or old age pension from the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs. The occupational pension scheme is designed to ensure that for an employee with full service – 40 years – his or her total pension benefit – social insurance pension plus occupational pension – would amount to 50% of pensionable remuneration. Moreover, if the employee concerned has dependants, his or her total benefit would be in excess of 50% of pensionable remuneration.

The report of the Commission on Public Service Pensions was published on 31 January 2001. The Government intends to make formal decisions on the commission's recommendations once it has had an opportunity to consider the report in detail. The pension entitlements of non-established State employees will be considered in that context.
