Question:

315 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide a comprehensive report on progress in the major refurbishment and repair programme for St. Thomas's national school, Esker, Lucan, County Dublin, with reference to the removal of asbestos material, the work on the roof, anti-dampness measures, drainage problems and any other salient items; if he will detail the works outstanding; and the approximate timetable for their completion. [8618/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 314 and 315 together.

The provision of temporary accommodation has been completed at St. Anne's and St. Thomas's national schools, Esker, Lucan, County Dublin. Tenders for the roof repair works at the schools are currently being evaluated by the school's design team. The removal of asbestos will be incorporated into the contract for the roof works and this will be carried out in consultation with the Office of Public Works.

A report has been carried out on the drainage system at St. Thomas's national school and remedial works on the drainage system will be included in the contract. A survey will be carried out on the drainage system of St. Anne's national school.

The rate of progress to construction of any project depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project, the time required to undertake architectural planning, the volume of other projects being dealt with by the design team and my Department's building unit, the period required for the granting of planning permission and obtaining a fire certificate, the availability of funding, the outcome of the tender competition and the procurement, where relevant, of bonds, insurance and tax clearance by prospective contractors. Consequently, it is not possible at this point to provide a timeframe as to when the projects at St. Anne's and St. Thomas's national schools will proceed to construction.

The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.
