Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

345 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason his Department is not providing the necessary full-time care for a person (details supplied) in County Meath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8973/01]

The board of management of the primary school currently attended by the pupil in question has employed a full-time special needs assistant to help cater for his needs in accordance with the sanction of my Department.

When the pupil is transferring to a second level school, the authorities of the school concerned may apply for a special needs assistant post. My Department will consider any such application when received.

Where a special needs assistant post is sanctioned, it is a matter for the authorities of the school concerned to engage a suitable person in accordance with the current terms and conditions applicable to such posts in second-level schools.
