Written Answers. - Railway Works.

Paul McGrath

Question:

106 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if work on the second rail track from Dublin to Maynooth is now completed; the costs involved in these works; the date of completion; if the new signalling system and track improvements from Maynooth to Mullingar are now completed; if so, the completion date; the total cost of these works; the number of additional rolling stock procured for services on the Dublin/Mullingar/Sligo line; the costs involved; the additional services which are now available on this line resulting from the expenditure outlined; if new commuter services will be available from Mullingar to Dublin; and, if so, when. [8923/01]

I have been advised by Iarnród Éireann that work on the second track between Dublin and Maynooth is now complete at a cost of approximately £28 million. Some additional work in relation to level crossings and stations is ongoing and Iarnród Éireann have advised me that this work will be completed in June 2001.

The upgrading of the track between Maynooth and Mullingar is also complete at a cost of approximately £15 million. The enhancement of the signalling system between Maynooth and Mullingar is awaiting the resolution of certain contractual matters.

Some 20 additional diesel railcars have been delivered to Iarnród Éireann to provide enhanced services on the Maynooth line at a cost of £18.7 million.

The introduction of enhanced services is awaiting the resolution of certain industrial relation issues. These will be the subject of a full Labour Court hearing on 12 April 2001.
