Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bus Services.

Nora Owen

Question:

107 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the applications she has received from Bus Átha Cliath for new bus services in the Dublin region; the routes of such applications; when she will make a decision in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8989/01]

In January this year directives issued to CIE under section 26(1) and to Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann under section 19(7) of the Transport (Re-organisation of Coras Iompair Éireann) Act, 1986, regarding new notification and approval procedures in respect of proposals for the introduction of new or modified services by Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann.

The aim of this new regulatory approach is to ensure that an operator, such as Dublin Bus, which is exempt from the requirement to hold a licence in accordance with the Road Transport Act, 1932, for road passenger services, does not announce or introduce services, which may serve to pre-empt the introduction of licensed services by private operators. My intention is to ensure fair treatment of new service proposals on the part of Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann on the one hand and the private sector on the other.

Dublin Bus is complying with the directives and co-operating with my Department in respect of guidelines for the administration of the new notification system. Since the inception of the new notification system a number of proposals for new bus services in the Dublin region have been received from Dublin Bus. Those which have been approved and are in operation are as follows:

No.41ANew section of the 41 service to Swords Manor via Glen Ellen

No.118New service from Kilternan Church to Fleet Street via the Leopardstown Road and the Stillorgan Road.

No.127New Service from Donaghamede Roundabout to Leeson Street Bridge via Clare Hall and the Malahide Road.

No.129Baldoyle to Leeson Street Bridge via Grange Road, Springdale Road and the Malahide Road.

For reasons of commercial sensitivity, I do not propose to provide detailed information on proposals for new services by Dublin Bus which have been approved but are not in operation or which are still under consideration by my Department.
