Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Organised Crime.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

129 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals he has to set up a task force on organised crime, similar to the Northern Ireland Organised Crime Task Force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9375/01]

The tackling of organised crime remains one of my highest priorities. The legislative and law enforcement measures which have been introduced in recent years have had a significant impact on organised crime. Major organised crime gangs have been dismantled and a number of prominent criminals have fled this jurisdiction.

The Garda Commissioner and I are satisfied that there are adequate structures, measures and resources in place to provide an effective response to fight organised crime and I do not propose to set up a task force on organised crime similar to the Northern Ireland Organised Crime Task Force.
