Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Martin Brady

Question:

148 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Defence the position regarding the closure of Clancy Barracks, Dublin; and the plans for redeployment of regular Defence Forces staff and civilian staff. [9440/01]

A tender competition for the appointment of selling agents for the sale of Clancy Barracks was held recently. The tenders are being examined and it is hoped to appoint selling agents in the near future.

With regard to the military personnel located at the barracks, the military authorities advise that such personnel will be given the option to apply for posting to similar appointments in the new logistics base unit in the Defence Forces training centre at the Curragh or to the strength of 2 Eastern Brigade in Dublin. There is no indication as to how many personnel based in Clancy Barracks will opt for transfer to the Curragh.

The position in relation to civilian staff at the barracks is that I recently met with both the closure committee and representatives from the joint industrial council for State employees to review progress in the matter of accommodating civilian staff who will be required to move following the closure of the barracks late this year. Of the 91 civilian staff still remaining in the barracks the present position is that upward of 11 are expected to opt for the voluntary early retirement package; 14 will be transferred to other locations in the Dublin area; three have indicated their willing ness to transfer to the Curragh; 29 have indicated a preference to remain in the Dublin area; 33 have expressed no preference and one staff member will have retired.
A number of vacancies remain to be filled in the Dublin area and staff at the barracks have been invited to apply for these posts. My Department is in discussions with other Departments and State agencies regarding the possibility of some personnel transferring to those Departments and agencies.
