108 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will increase the premium paid for forestry under Council Regulation (EEC) No. 1820/80 as amended by Council Regulation (EEC) No. 103088 from its low rate of £23 to the current rate of £67 per acre. [9682/01]

Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. Fahey):

I am considering an increase in the premium payable under the Forestry Operational Programme, 1989-1993 from Exchequer sources. In view of the State aids aspect, any decision to have the cost borne by the Exchequer would require notification to the European Commission.
