Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

168 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Health and Children when a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim will be called for treatment to St. Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin 4. [10599/01]

The provision of medical treatment to eligible persons in County Leitrim is, in this instance, the statutory responsibility of the North-Western Health Board. My Department has asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the position in relation to this case and to reply to the Deputy directly.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

169 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children when a person (details supplied) in County Kildare will be admitted for surgery; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10600/01]

I understand that the person referred to by the Deputy is on the waiting list for a heart and lung transplant at Harefield Hospital in the UK, under the referral of patients abroad scheme.

The referral of patients abroad scheme is administered, in this case, by the Eastern Regional Health Authority which is responsible for the provision of health services to persons living in Counties Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. My Department recently contacted the authority in relation to this case and I am advised that the regional chief executive of the authority is currently investigating this matter and will issue a reply directly to the Deputy.

Monica Barnes

Question:

170 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of people awaiting surgical prostate procedures in each hospital on 31 December 2000; the numbers waiting three, six, nine and 12 months; the number waiting over 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10638/01]

Hospital in-patient waiting list data are collated by my Department from information supplied by the health agencies under various specialities. These data do not specifically identify the number of patients awaiting prostate surgery procedures.

Denis Foley

Question:

171 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Health and Children the total number of patients currently on waiting lists for hip operations at Tralee General Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10639/01]

Question:

172 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of patients on waiting lists and requiring various forms of cardiac surgery in County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10640/01]

Question:

174 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Health and Children the most recent waiting lists for Tralee General Hospital; the average waiting time for each category; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10644/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 171, 172 and 174 together.

The in-patient waiting list data for Tralee General Hospital as at 31 December 2000 in the format collected by my Department is as follows:

Waiting list data is collated by my Department from information supplied by hospitals and health boards. The information received is not in a format that could identify the number of patients from County Kerry who would require various forms of cardiac surgery.
Overall hospital waiting list figures have gone down by almost a quarter since December 1999 and it is my intention to pursue continual reductions in waiting lists and waiting times for hospital treatment in 2001. Dedicated funding for waiting list procedures of £34 million was allocated in 2000 to health agencies to enable hospitals to carry out waiting list procedures and I am pleased to inform the Deputy that £34.5 million has been indicated to health agencies under the waiting list initiative for 2001.
