Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Seán Haughey

Question:

317 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the role his Department can play to ensure that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3, who cannot read or write and who has not attended school since December 2000, receives an appropriate education including remedial teaching, which is free from harassment by pupils; his views on whether active intervention by the State is essential immediately in a case such as this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10688/01]

I can assure the Deputy that I share the concern he expresses in relation to this case. I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate this case as a matter of urgency so that suitable educational provision can be put in place for this child at the earliest possible date.
