Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - Foot and Mouth Disease.

Michael Ring

Question:

113 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the action which can be taken to cull wild goats and sheep on the public roads in a village (details supplied) in County Mayo, particularly in view of the threat of foot and mouth disease. [10549/01]

Stray animals may be impounded by the Garda Síochána or a local authority under the Animals Act, 1985, which is administered by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. Further to my reply to Question No. 244 on 20 March, my Department has written to the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the local authorities, including Mayo County Council, for appropriate action within their area of responsibility for stray animals to ensure that the disease risk presented by such animals is addressed during the current crisis.
