Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

237 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will confirm that a school (details supplied) in Dublin 13 will not lose a teacher in 2001 in view of the fast growth of the locality and the fact that it is located in a disadvantaged northside partnership area. [10959/01]

The staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners. The enrolment at the school in question of 262 pupils will warrant the staffing of a principal and nine mainstream class teachers for the 2001-02 school year.

The board of management made representations last year regarding an increase in enrolment at the school for the current school year. The increase in enrolment did not materialise and in fact the enrolment dropped by one pupil between 30 September 1999 and 30 September 2000.

Accordingly, under the guidelines agreed with the INTO the post of tenth mainstream class teacher will be due to be discontinued for the 2001-02 school year.

Seán Barrett

Question:

238 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide a full-time resource teacher to Guardian Angels national school, Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, County Dublin, in view of the fact that children with special needs in this school cannot be properly cared for with the limited service provided by the present part-time resource teacher. [10960/01]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department has recently sanctioned a full-time resource teacher post for the school in question. This post is additional to the part-time resource teacher support already available to the school.
