Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - Veterinary Surgeons.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

112 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will make the necessary arrangements to have recognition as a qualified veterinary surgeon and authority to practice as a veterinary surgeon afforded to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 15; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10904/01]

Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act, 1931, as amended, responsibility for entry of persons on the Register of Veterinary Surgeons for Ireland rests with the Veterinary Council. Under this legislation, the council may enter on the register only persons who are citizens of, and hold an appropriate qualification from, an EU member state or from certain countries within the European Economic Area. I can also inform the Deputy that it is my intention to seek Government approval in the very near future to bring forward draft legislation to provide for regulation generally of the veterinary profession and ancillary diciplines.
