Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Rail Services.

John Gormley

Question:

173 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her views on whether CIE should be allowed to charge rail passengers for parking at railway stations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11843/01]

I have been informed by CIE that it views adequate car parking facilities at public transport amenities as a key element of the overall strategy to encourage motorists to use public transport. The company recognizes that such parking facilities must be adequate in number, secure and customer friendly. CIE have advised me that they have recently been examining possible options to improve car-parking facilities at commuter railway stations. These improvements relate to increasing supply, improving facilities at existing car parks, improved security and improved general management.

I have been informed by CIE that no decisions in relation to charging rail passengers for parking at rail stations have been taken and no proposals have been submitted to the boards of Iarnród Éireann or CIE.
