Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Bovine Diseases.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

248 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the total number of cases of BSE detected in the course of the recent beef destruct scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12396/01]

The purchase for destruction scheme is a market support scheme established to take the surplus of animals resulting from the BSE crisis off the market. The animals in question are not intended for human consumption and the scheme precludes their being tested for BSE except in exceptional cases.
