Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Income Tax.

Michael Creed

Question:

267 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork is paying excessive amounts of income tax. [11921/01]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that neither the taxpayer nor his employer informed the inspector of taxes when the taxpayer commenced employment. Consequently, a notice of tax credits and standard rate cut-off point was not issued for the taxpayer and the Revenue Commissioners are not aware of the specific tax arrangements being applied. The taxpayer should give his local tax office details of his employment as soon as possible to enable the inspector to issue a notice of tax credits and standard rate cut-off point to the taxpayer's employer. When the employer applies the tax credits on the notice to the taxpayer's earnings, the correct amount of tax will be deducted and, if appropriate, a refund of tax can be given.
