Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Cancer Treatment Services.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

310 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the capital grant allocation approved in 2000 to expand and develop the breast cancer services at Portlaoise General Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11658/01]

No application for capital grant funding was received by my Department from the Midland Health Board in respect of the development of symptomatic breast disease services at Portlaoise General Hospital in 2000 and no capital allocation was made to the Midland Health Board for this purpose. However, national cancer strategy funding of £500,000 was allocated to the Midland Health Board in the current year to enable the board to commence the development of a centre of excellence for the treatment of symptomatic breast disease at Portlaoise General Hospital. I understand that the board is currently considering the exact application of this funding.
