Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Swimming Pool Projects.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

72 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received a report from the Office of Public Works on the proposals for a new swimming pool in Tuam, County Galway; if approval and costings have been finalised; the next stages to be advanced; if he will give a starting date for this project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11889/01]

Last December, Galway County Council submitted a preliminary report to my Department in respect of a replacement pool for Tuam. My Department has received a technical assessment from the Office of Public Works in connection with this preliminary report and sought additional documentation from Galway County Council in relation to costings and other technical elements of the project. Some documentation, which has recently been received from the local authority is under consideration by this Department at present and my officials will be in contact with the council if further documentation is necessary.

There are four stages in a swimming pool project – preliminary report stage, contract document stage, tender stage and construction stage. The Department's technical advisers evaluate each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project, unless prior approval issues from this Department.

As a number of other stages in the process must be completed before final approval is given to proceed with construction, it is not possible to be precise about a commencement date for the project.
