Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Asgard Restoration Project.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

477 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her decision to grant a licence to alter the Asgard is irrevocable; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11777/01]

I, with the agreement of the Government, issued a licence to alter the Asgard in order to facilitate its restoration to full sailing condition. This decision was made as, on balance, I concluded that a sailing vessel was best preserved as a fully working boat, and therefore the restoration of the ketch represented the most effective means of preserving its history. At this time I believe that restoration is the most appropriate option for the vessel.
