Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - Crime Levels.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

193 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if final crime figures for the year 2000 will be available; if so, when; if these will show the number of incidents of street violence reported during the year; the number of such cases in respect of which charges have been preferred and-or dropped; the number of cases involving fatalities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12445/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that the final crime figures for the year 2000 will be published in the annual report of the Garda Síochána, 2000. These figures are currently being compiled and it is not possible to determine exactly when they will be available.

The term "street violence" has a very broad definition, and could apply to a wide variety of offences which might occur in a public place.

I am further informed by Garda authorities that statistics published in the Garda Síochána annual reports relate only to the offence type, and that the location at which the incident happened, e.g. public place, is not indicated in the figures.
