Vol. 535 No. 3

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these two topics separately and I call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic, I have received notice from Deputy Naughten and I call on him to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the Adjournment of the House under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the threatened blockade of the N5 over the June bank holiday weekend by road hauliers due to the substandard condition of that road; the fact that it is not planned to upgrade it for a further 15 years; the severe restriction this will impose on the development of the western region and the dramatic impact such a blockade would have on tourism in the region, which is on its knees due to both the foot and mouth disease restrictions and the Irish Rail strike last summer.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. In regard to the second topic, I have received notice from Deputy Gormley and I call on him to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following issue of urgent public importance: the introduction by the Revenue Commissioners of what is in effect a new tax amnesty; its implicit acceptance of tax evasion and the message this sends to compliant taxpayers throughout the country.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one con templated by Standing Order 31, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
