Vol. 535 No. 3

Written Answers - Jobs Figures.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

40 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the projected figures for job losses and job creation in 2001; and if she proposes any additional initiatives to counter the recent spate of job losses. [12427/01]

A projected overall figure for job losses in 2001 is not available. However, it is hoped that the job creation efforts in 2001 by the three major state development agencies, i.e. IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Shannon Development will result in a net increase of about 17,000 jobs in companies supported by those agencies.

There is a wide range of financial and other supports available from the State agencies to encourage the promotion and expansion of industry and to counter the adverse effects of job losses. These supports are designed to help firms improve their competitiveness in an increasingly global economy. The agencies are particularly focused on achieving more balanced job creation on a regional basis, and considerable resources are being deployed for this purpose.
