Vol. 535 No. 3

Written Answers - Industrial Accidents.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

64 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if the health and safety authority has completed its consideration of the report of the investigation into the death of a man in an industrial accident at the Irish Ispat plant at Cobh in January 2001; if the authority intends to take any action arising from the report; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12188/01]

The National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health, also known as the Health and Safety Authority, is the State body with responsibility for the administration, monitoring and enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation. The carrying out of inspections and investigations are a day-to-day matter for the authority.

I have been informed by the authority that it has completed its investigation into the accident in question and that it is examining its report on the matter with a view to considering what enforcement action it may take. In view of this it would be inappropriate of me to comment further on the investigation. I have been further informed by the authority that it is in continuous contact with the company in question regarding the implementation of safety management procedures within the company.
