Question:

112 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans he has to assist the angling sector in view of the severe difficulties it has encountered as a result of the foot and mouth restrictions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12904/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 84 and 112 together.

The position regarding angling and foot and mouth disease controls is now much improved to the benefit of all involved in the angling sector. Last week I announced that, with effect from 11 May, access to agricultural land by anglers will be permissible subject to precautionary conditions. In particular, contact with susceptible animals must be avoided and footwear and clothing must be cleaned and disinfected before and after use. I made this announcement following the most recent recommendations of the expert group on foot and mouth disease controls. With effect from 11 May, normal angling activity is possible throughout the country subject to the stated precautions.

I acknowledge the significant contribution which the angling sector has made in the battle against foot and mouth disease. Sacrifices have been made in the national interest throughout the country and, though we must remain vigilant against the threat of the disease, I am hopeful angling is now well placed to regain momentum and the remainder of the season will make up for difficulties experienced in the last few months.
