Vol. 535 No. 4

Written Answers - Bus Service.

Liam Aylward

Question:

136 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will review the application for a bus service by a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny to Waterford Institute of Technology and permit the inclusion of other areas on this route which would make the service viable. [12732/01]

On 2 October 2000 an application was received for a passenger licence to operate a bus service from Carlow to Waterford and Waterford IT from Monday to Friday.

The applicant's proposed timetable conflicted with Bus Éireann's Dungarvan to Waterford service and Waterford to Carlow service. The applicant's proposed schedule also conflicted with that of another private operator on both the outward and return journey at Carlow, Ballyhale, Mullinavat and Waterford Regional Technical College.

A licence was issued to the bus operator on 22 January 2001. This licence was subsequently amended on 6 February 2001 to include additional stops en route on the outward and return journeys. It was not possible to include stops at Ballyhale and Mullinavat as there is already another private operator licensed for this service.

The provisions of the Road Transport Act, 1932, require that regard must be had to existing services when considering an application for a route passenger licence. In this case the existing services were considered to be sufficient.
