Vol. 535 No. 5

Written Answers - Scouting Campsite.

Brendan Smith

Question:

195 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if funding will be provided towards the establishment of a permanent jamboree campsite at Castle Saunderson Estate, County Cavan, for the scouting movement and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13194/01]

I met with representatives from Castle Saunderson on December 14 2000 at which the group presented its proposal to establish a permanent jamboree campsite for the scouting movement in Ireland. I have also written about the proposal to my colleague, the Minister of State with responsibility for youth affairs, Deputy O'Dea. I explained to the group of representatives that the only scheme of funding administered directly by my Department for voluntary and community groups, is the sports capital programme and that the focus of this programme is the development of sporting and recreation facilities. I informed the group that the closing date for the receipt of applications under the 2001 programme was February 9 2001. No application was received by my Department from the group under the 2001 programme.
