Vol. 536 No. 1

Written Answers - Garda Recruitment.

Dick Spring

Question:

149 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if applicants for entry to the Garda Síochána, who were rejected in the past on height grounds, are entitled to re-apply for admission to the force. [13482/01]

I recently obtained the approval of the Government for the drafting of amendments to the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, to provide, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána. The amending regulations are currently being drafted in my Department. These regulations prescribe the criteria for recruitment of trainees and, following the requisite period of training, the appointment of members to the Garda Síochána. It is open to anybody to apply to join the Garda Síochána provided they meet the requirements in the regulations in terms of age, education etc.
