Vol. 536 No. 1

Written Answers - Road Traffic Accident Statistics.

Jack Wall

Question:

150 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of drivers with provisional licences who have been involved in fatal accidents in the past five years; the number of provisional licence holders involved in accidents; the number involved in traffic offences over the same period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13484/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that detailed statistics in relation to the number of fatal and serious injury accidents on Irish roads are provided by the National Roads Authority, St. Martin's House, Waterloo Road, Dublin 4. The most recent report is in respect of 1999. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the provisional figure for fatal accidents for the year 2000 is 362, in which there were 415 fatalities; the 1999 equivalent figure is 374 fatal accidents, with 413 fatalities. I am also informed that figures for the number of serious injury accidents and details of drivers involved in such accidents for the year 2000, who were holders of provisional licences, are not readily available. It would take a considerable amount of Garda time to compile such information.

I refer the Deputy to the Government's national strategy on road safety in which there is a commitment given by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government to introduce a national vehicle driver file. This should facilitate the provision of the type of information sought by the Deputy.
