Ivor Callely

Question:

43 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the co-operation which exists between public transport service providers to ensure satisfactory, efficient and integrated public transport service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11652/01]

I am suspicious of this one.

There must be good news on this question.

As Deputies are aware, Deputy Callely is single-minded and tables all types of searching questions to all Departments.

I do not notice the type of questions he used to put down for us.

The Minister without interruption.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 9 and 43 together.

While there are some current examples of integrated ticketing arrangements, the light rail project office of CIE is proceeding with the preparation of an implementation plan and budget for the introduction of a national integrated ticketing scheme for initial deployment in the greater Dublin area. The office has been given this responsibility pending the establishment of the proposed railway procurement agency. The office is due to submit its plan by the end of May.

I am pleased integrated ticketing is finally happening and that a plan will be presented by the end of May. When does the Minister think integrated ticketing will be in operation? When will there be action on the ground?

The initial scheme will be a pilot project because that is how new developments are introduced. A plan is due to be presented and I hope it will get into gear immediately. It will be monitored, reported on and then implemented more widely.

What does the Minister mean by "immediately"? Does she have specific dates?

I do not have dates because I have not yet received the plan.

I am very sceptical because I have heard much about integrated ticketing schemes. I agree that such schemes are a necessity for an efficient transport system, but why was such a scheme not introduced long ago? The trains and buses are owned by the Minister. Why can she not tell the two bus companies and the train company as a matter of policy to put an integrated ticketing system in place immediately? I ask her to do so now. We do not want another plan; we want implementation and she should ensure that happens immediately.

I will receive an implementation plan. However, I agree with the Deputy. If one goes to other cities, one can travel widely on one ticket. However, Members of the House are well aware that it is a case of festina lente with regard to many matters involving CIE.
