Vol. 536 No. 2

Written Answers - Road Traffic Offences.

Seán Haughey

Question:

389 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself that the gardaí are adequately enforcing road traffic laws in relation to speeding, three tonne limits, breaking of amber traffic lights, cycling on footpaths and no left or right turn signs, in the Dublin metropolitan region; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13676/01]

I have been assured by the Garda authorities that breaches of the Road Traffic Acts,1961, as amended, are regularly targeted by way of various operations and initiatives under the Garda road safety initiative in the Dublin metropolitan region. I am informed by the Garda authorities that Garda operations target specific localities for breaches of road traffic legislation, including speeding, three tonne limits, breaking amber lights, cycling and no left/right turns. In addition, all Garda members enforce breaches of the traffic legislation as part of their normal duties. As well as the regional traffic unit, each division in the Dublin metropolitan region has a designated traffic unit which is deployed specifically on traffic management and enforcement matters. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the detection statistics for the Dublin metropolitan region for the year 2000 in respect of the offences referred to by the Deputy are set out in the following tabular statement:

Offence

Number of Detections

Speeding

137,529

Three Tonne Limit

867

Breaking Amber Light

6,141

Cycling on Footpath

160

No Left/Right Turn

2,978

I should state that the number of prosecutions for the year 2000 are not yet published. I assure the Deputy that the gardaí will continue to target motoring offences in the Dublin area.
