Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Food Safety Standards.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

165 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he is satisfied that the highest standards in terms of husbandry hygiene apply and that all aspects of production of food for the food chain here comply with the highest international standards; if he is further satisfied that imports are also subjected to these high standards; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14329/01]

I am satisfied that the highest standards apply along all links of the food chain in Ireland. The overall standards set for the production of food in Ireland and the EU are governed by EU regulations. In addition, there are many schemes in operation in Ireland which offer consumers standards above the minimum legally required under these regulations.

My Department, the Department of Health and Children and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland ensure that all EU regulatory requirements are complied with and, accordingly, guarantee the highest standards of food safety. Imports of food from outside the EU must also meet the standards set down in the EU regulations governing such imports.
