Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Capital Projects.

Alan Shatter

Question:

224 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the capital projects funded by his Department in the Dublin South constituency area during each of the years 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001; the amount of funding in each case; the projected capital projects to be funded by his Department in 2001; the amount of funding in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14287/01]

The Deputy will appreciate that information in relation to the funding of the various capital projects undertaken by my Department is not maintained on a constituency basis. However, I can give the Deputy the following information.

With regard to the Garda Síochána, a Garda CCTV system is in operation in Grafton Street and the surrounding area since the year 2000 at a cost of approximately £285,000. A Garda CCTV system is planned for Dún Laoghaire. It is envisaged that the system will comprise eight cameras and will be operational by the end of 2001. The Deputy will appreciate that a detailed costing for the project is not included as this could prejudice tenders.

With regard to child care, funding is currently available under my Department's equal opportunities child care programme, 2000 – 2006. In the time available for answering parliamentary questions it has not been possible to compile the information in relation to child care as the list is quite extensive. The information is being compiled at present and I will forward it to the Deputy as soon as possible.

As regards the Deputy's request for a projection of the number of capital projects in the South Dublin area for 2001, funding under the pro gramme is demand led and as a result it would be quite difficult to estimate the number of future applications for 2001. I understand that much work is being done to facilitate groups with the development of strategic child care plans for their areas.
