Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

350 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application from a school (details supplied) in County Meath for funding towards additional classrooms and the provision of office accommodation as the present school is over-crowded; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14684/01]

An application for permanent accommodation has been received in my Department from the school referred to by the Deputy. The planning and building unit of my Department is examining the application, taking account of factors such as housing developments and demographic trends in the area. This examination is at an advanced stage and a response will issue to the board of management of the school at the earliest possible date.

Pending a decision on the school's requirement for permanent accommodation, an application for temporary accommodation to meet the school's short-term needs is currently being considered by the planning and building unit. Under my Department's scheme, 95% of the cost of renting interim accommodation is refundable to schools with permanent recognition. A decision on the application will be made shortly and the board of management will be informed of the outcome.
