Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

355 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that transition year students and others have to live and work in prefabs installed in St. Louis Convent, Carrickmacross, County Monaghan 30 years ago; that the working kitchen had to be closed down; that the roof on the corridor is wide open; that glass cannot be replaced in the windows due to the fact there are no frames to hold the glass and that the conditions are unsafe; when this situation can be rectified; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14700/01]

The building unit of my Department recently received an application from the management authority of St. Louis Convent for replacement prefabs and other refurbishment works at the school. The management authority was requested to submit a report, which has recently been received in my Department.

Officials of my Department visited the school on 21 May 2001 with a view to assessing the best way to progress the proposed works. In the meantime, the planning section of my Department is reviewing the long-term viability of the school.
