Vol. 536 No. 6

Written Answers. - Under-age Drinking.

Billy Timmins

Question:

90 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of publicans who have been prosecuted for serving drink to people under 18 years of age under the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15043/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 58 prosecutions have been taken under the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2000, since it came into effect. Of the 58 prosecutions, 22 resulted in convictions, 30 are pending, and six were dismissed.

I am further informed that 15 closure orders have been made, one of which is being appealed. The periods of closure imposed are as follows: two for one day; four for three days; three for five days; four for seven days; two for 14 days.
