Vol. 537 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remuneration for Transferred School Staff.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

207 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the financial arrangements under which third level institutions that accepted academic staff on transfer from Carysfort College when that college was closed, also received the salaries of the transferred staff; if he will indicate, in relation to each institution accepting such transferred staff, for each of the years 1990 to 2000 the number of transferred staff and the amount paid directly or indirectly by his Department to each of the institutions concerned, in respect of the salaries of the transferred staff concerned. [15508/01]

On the closure of Carysfort College of Education in 1988, 23 academic staff were seconded to the university sector as follows: 13 to University College Dublin; three to Trinity College Dublin; four to the National University of Ireland, Maynooth; and three to Dublin City University.

In 1989, £650,000 was provided to the Higher Education Authority, the statutory funding authority for the universities, to cover the salary costs of the staff concerned. This funding has since been subsumed into the overall funding levels of the individual institutions and is not separately identified.

Further funding of £2.4 million was provided in 2000 for the integration of the staff into the relevant university pension schemes.
