Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Foot and Mouth Disease

Seymour Crawford

Question:

143 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will give an update on the work to rule by staff at district veterinary offices who are refusing to process FMD5 and FMD7 forms causing major problems for locked up herds, the transfer of pure bred bulls, sheep and pigs from 4 May 2001 to outfarms or new farms whichever the case may be; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15425/01]

The union representing clerical staff has expressed some reservations about the arrangements for the issue of permits. My Department has had discussions with the union and does not expect that there will be obstruction of the permitting arrangements for the movement of animals.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

144 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the proposals he has to lift the embargo on the sale of pedigree breeding stock. [15525/01]

The Deputy will be aware that at various times in recent weeks I have made announcements in relation to the phased normalisation of farming activities, subject to strict compliance with protocols and based on advice from the committee of veterinary experts, which I established to advise on such matters.

In relation to the movement of bulls, I announced on 1 May 2001 that from 2 May the movement of stock bulls from farm to farm for breeding purposes would be permitted, subject to strict adherence to a protocol which I published on the date of the announcement, and which is available on my Department's web site.
