Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Interpretative Centres.

Donal Carey

Question:

45 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands when the Burren interpretative plans will be finalised; and the proposals she has for Corofin village. [16012/01]

I assume the Deputy is referring to a consultancy which I shortly expect to commission to examine the options that may exist throughout the north Clare area for the facilitation of public access to the Burren National Park and for control of that access. My Department will shortly complete terms of reference for this exercise and tenders will be invited in accordance with standard procedure. The Deputy may be aware that my Department offered £500,000 each to Kilfenora and Corofin towards the development of visitor facilities at those centres. The offer to Kilfenora has been accepted, and work is well advanced on a facility which will, I believe, greatly enhance the appeal of Kilfenora as a tourist destination as well as very effectively informing visitors to the Burren about that unique place. Thus far, the community at Corofin has not been in a position to take up this offer. However, the offer remains open and I will carefully consider any viable proposal put to me.

Questions Nos. 46 to 48, inclusive, answered orally.
