Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Archives.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

51 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands her views on the concerns expressed in the recent report of the National Archive Advisory Council that the situation regarding records created before the Act is unsatisfactory in some Departments; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15726/01]

In its recently published report for 1999, the National Archives Advisory Council reiterated its concern at the failure of some Departments to transfer records to the National Archives as required by the National Archives Act, 1986, and referred in particular to two Departments which still hold large quantities of pre-1960 records that are overdue for transfer. I share the council's concern with regard to the transfer of records. I understand that the position in relation to one Department will be substantially improved when a major transfer takes place later this year and that the National Archives is currently reviewing the position with regard to such records with the second Department.
