Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Mildred Fox

Question:

418 Miss Fox asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider providing a two classroom extension as opposed to a one classroom extension for St. Kevin's national school, Glendalough, County Wicklow; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15923/01]

The application referred to by the Deputy has been examined in the planning and building unit of my Department and a letter has issued to the board of management outlining the proposed long-term accommodation to be provided at the school. The board of management has appealed the decision of my Department in this regard and has stated it will forward information to support its appeal as soon as possible. On receipt of this information, the matter of the long-term accommodation requirements of the school will be re-examined. Temporary accommodation will be provided at the school to facili tate the appointment of an additional teacher from September 2001.

Question:

419 Miss Fox asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider providing improved accommodation at Carysfort national school, Arklow, County Wicklow; when his Department will be in a position to assess the school for such works; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this matter has been ongoing for some time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15924/01]

My Department has received an application from the management authorities at Carysfort national school, Arklow, County Wicklow, for grant aid towards an extension.

In view of the large number of school building projects currently being processed by my Department and the priority to be afforded to such projects, it is not possible at this point to provide a timeframe for the commencement of architectural planning for an extension at this school. Officials of my Department recently met with the school authorities and consideration is now been given to the provision of temporary accommodation in order to alleviate some of the accommodation difficulties at the school. The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.
