Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drift Net Fishermen Compensation Package.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

115 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the assistance he can give to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford regarding a payment not made by Waterford Harbour Commissioners to her husband during his life time nor to her since his death; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15577/01]

As the Deputy is aware Waterford Harbour Commissioners has been replaced as a corporate entity by the Port of Waterford Harbour Company. Having sought a full report in the matter from the Waterford Harbour Company I outlined the position in detail to the Deputy in my replies to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 136 and 173 answered on 1 May 2001 and 22 May 2001 respectively.

I have noted the further correspondence sent to me by the Deputy in relation to the committee representing the fishermen and licence holders during the relevant period. I have asked my Department to consult with the relevant regional fisheries board responsible for licensing – the Southern Regional Fishery Board – based on all the information furnished by the Deputy and the details given in my replies based on information provided by the Port of Waterford Harbour Company.

My Department will then review the position with the harbour company. However I would not like to raise any false hopes in the matter as this is primarily a matter for decision by the Harbour Company as an independent commercial State company.
