Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Educational Projects.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

598 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the success of an education project at St. Joseph's Junior National School, Balcurris Road, Ballymun, Dublin 11, where a teacher taught seriously disadvantaged pupils on a one to one basis resulting in a significant improvement in the children's self-esteem, attendance rates, participation, reading and writing skills and discipline; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this project is threatened by a slight drop in pupil numbers which may result in the loss of this teacher; and if he will guarantee the continuation of this teacher in the school. [17284/01]

I have received a letter of appeal personally regarding this matter from the acting principal of this school yesterday. I have requested an official of my Department to visit the school immediately and to report to me on the issues raised by the Deputy and in the letter to me.
