Vol. 538 No. 5

Written Answers. - Civil Service Appointments.

John Perry

Question:

115 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Finance if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 83 of 14 June 2001, he will outline the reason the Civil Service Commission has not made appointments in Sligo from the former civil servant panel; the agreement which has been made with the union concerned; if it is possible that this former civil servant panel for Sligo will become obsolete and never be used; if there is a transfer list for the Department of Health and Children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18405/01]

The situation is that appointments to provincial offices are in the first instance made from the central transfer lists, provided that the person is available for transfer when a vacancy arises. This arrangement operates with the agreement of the union concerned. To date, the Civil Service Commission has not been requested to make an assignment to Sligo from the former civil servant panel.

While it is possible that the former civil servant panel for Sligo could become obsolete without being used, the panel is, however, likely to remain live for some time. In that event it is possible that callings may fall to be made from it.

The current situation is that there is a considerable number of applicants on the transfer lists for Sligo.
