Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Michael Ring

Question:

200 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance if he will ascertain from the Office of Public Works when they will carry out flood prevention works (details supplied) in County Mayo. [18533/01]

The flooding in question is caused by the insufficient flow capacity following heavy rainfall of a road bridge and a field accommodation bridge on the Moy catchment drainage scheme which is maintained by the Commissioners of Public Works. The effective solution of the problem would involve the replacement of both bridges. However, the cost of carrying out this work would be vastly disproportionate to any benefit that might accrue to the landowner in question and on this basis the commissioner could not justify undertaking it. The commissioners will continue to carry out periodic maintenance works in the area to alleviate the problem.
