Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Consultant Immunologists.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

220 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of consultant immunologists practising in the public sector; the location of each immunologist; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18518/01]

At present there are four posts of consultant immunologist in the public health service. The posts are structured on the following basis: one between Beaumont Hospital and the Mater Hospital; one between St. James's Hospital and University College, Dublin; one between University College Hospital, Galway-Merlin Park Regional Hospital Galway and one between St. Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, and University College, Dublin, which is currently unfilled.

The recently published report of the Medical Manpower Forum recommends significant increases in the number of hospital consultants in order to provide a consultant delivered service. The national task force on medical manpower, which is currently being established, will be asked to quantify resource requirements in this regard.
